“I own a dance and performing arts school in Moorebank, NSW. When we were closed down by the government during the COVID pandemic, I had no idea what to do. I felt numb and I really did not think I could survive. I joined the Business Support Program to reset myself and my business.

My coach encouraged me to offer virtual classes to my students during lockdown. This had a whole new set of challenges, but I overcame them and began offering virtual classes from the beginning of Term II. Virtual class numbers were quite consistent until almost the end of the lockdown, although it was a big challenge to keep the students engaged online.

We also did a lot of work on client retention, increasing student numbers and finances. We worked on my P&L and balance sheets, and I learned how I could improve and keep my cash flow steady by doing simple things like reducing my inventory. This was a real eye opener. By doing some small tweaking here and there, the bottom line improved immediately.

Pre-COVID my studio had 328 students. During the lockdown, this dropped to 60 students participating in online classes. When we were able to start face to face classes again, I reopened with 101 students. Today, we are back at 184 students and we have picked up 83 new students in the last 10 weeks.

Being held accountable is one of the most valuable aspects of the program for me, because accountability stops me going off on a tangent and not finishing projects that I begin.

We are living in extraordinary and very challenging times.

The coronavirus pandemic is creating widespread panic and lots of uncertainty and stress for people, companies and economies. This really is a crisis situation.

At times like this, business leaders have an incredible responsibility. Our decisions and actions impact a lot of people… our family, our employees, our clients and our community.

Although most of you know me as someone who helps companies to create game-changing international strategies, I’m no stranger to crisis.

What many of you won’t know is that I worked in Iraq between 2006 and 2010, helping the US and British governments to get the country back on its feet. 

It was intense.

I worked in almost total lockdown for four years and when I did go out, I wore body armour and had an armed security detail with me. It was like living in a four-star gaol. I was rocketed, I was bombed, I lost five colleagues in a kidnapping. Four of them never came back.

And everyday I had to solve problems that no one had ever seen and come up with solutions that worked.

Most of the challenges I faced at work in Iraq were not things that I had ever had to deal with before. No one had. 

We had to figure out how to deliver billions of dollars in programs, support and advice to businesses and government when there was no electricity, no landline and often no ability for us to physically meet the people we were supposed to be helping. Back then, Zoom and Facetime didn’t even exist. It was tough.
