The UK-Australia FTA Comes Into Force
At midnight tonight on 31 May 2023, the UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement will come into force, marking the beginning of a new chapter of economic collaboration and abundant opportunities for Australian and British businesses.
The landmark agreement was described by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as “one of the most comprehensive, innovative and ambitious free trade agreements concluded by Australia to date”. It strengthens the already close relationship between The United Kingdom and Australia and offers a plethora of benefits for businesses in both countries.
So, what does this agreement mean for businesses in Australia and the UK?
Enhanced Market Access
Promotion of Services and Investments
The agreement facilitates increased access in the services sector, enabling Australian service providers in fields like finance, law, and telecommunications to explore the UK market. British businesses will gain improved access to the dynamic Australian market, with improved access to diverse sectors such as professional financial services, digital technology, and education.
The FTA also encourages investment cooperation between the two nations. By providing a more predictable and transparent investment framework, it fosters greater confidence for businesses in both countries looking to invest across borders.
Stimulating Innovation and Collaboration
Streamlined Business Travel and Mobility
Access to working holiday visas will also improve in both countries, making it easier for Australians to live and work in the United Kingdom, and for British citizens to do the same in Australia.
These changes will allow Australians to apply for working holidays up to the age of 35, instead of 30, and stay for a maximum of three years instead of two. British citizens aged 18 to 35 will also be able to work and travel in Australia for up to three years under a Working Holiday Maker Visa. Australia also aims to pilot a new visa scheme, allowing early career workplace exchanges for graduates between 21 and 45. This will significantly improve career opportunities for those looking to work abroad, as well as deepening interpersonal and cultural links between the two countries.
Streamlined business travel will foster collaboration and facilitate greater exchange of knowledge and skills, promoting the transfer of best practices, and ultimately lead to increased economic opportunities for businesses on both sides.
In summary…
The UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement opens doors to mutually beneficial opportunities, allowing businesses in both countries to forge stronger partnerships, expand into new markets, and leverage each other’s strengths. By deepening the bilateral relationship, this agreement propels businesses towards success in the global marketplace.
